DESCRIPTION:Dr Michael Ochsner\nThe third SYoS workshop “What can be mea
sured and how? Data and responsible research assessment”\, organized in
collaboration with ETH Library\, will take place on 8 February 2024 on EPF
L campus.\n\nSYoS\nThe “Swiss Year of Scientometrics” (SYoS) is a proj
ect launched by the ETH Library and funded by swissuniversities. The mai
n goal of the project is to initiate a discourse about the responsible and
appropriate use of scientometrics in Switzerland. As part of the project
\, the ETH Library\, in collaboration with the EPFL Library\, EPFL Open Sc
ience Unit and EPFL Academic Data Unit are organizing the third SYoS lect
ure and workshop on EPFL campus.\n\nWorkshop\nThe third SYoS workshop will
focus on various aspects of applying scientometrics in Switzerland. After
lightning talks on Swiss and non-Swiss open science projects based on ope
n data\, participants will discuss the practical implications of questions
raised during Elizabeth Gadd’s lecture on the assessment of open scien
ce. The focus is specifically on the needs for Switzerland:\n\n	To what ex
tent could Switzerland benefit from a national repository of research outp
uts? If such a repository exists\, which analyses and use cases become pos
sible? What are the trade-offs if such a repository relies on commercial o
r open databases\, on local institutional research repositories\, or on bo
th? Who would be suitable stakeholders within Switzerland and beyond? How
could interoperability among the stakeholders be ensured and long-term sus
tainability of the project be achieved?\n	Monitoring as an important tool
for gathering evidence and enabling progress: How could different aspects
of science be measured with readily available data? In particular\, how co
uld we monitor open science? What data are available in the first place an
d what is missing? How can values be supported with metrics\, and metrics
be rewarding\, fair\, inclusive\, serve as incentives and be less suscepti
ble to gaming?\n	How does the idea of a national and local monitoring of s
cience interact with current initiative of reforming research assessment (
CoARA)? How to balance the distinct needs of institutions\, interoperabili
ty\, and fair standards?\n\nWe are very pleased that Dr Michael Ochsner (F
ORS) has agreed to chair this workshop.\n\n\nRegistration\nPlease note tha
t the workshop is an onsite event.\nPlease send us an email to register.
