DESCRIPTION:FreeNovation provides funding opportunities for unconventional
 \, bold projects that have the potential to open up novel research directi
 ons and aim beyond incremental innovation and discovery.\n\nIn this year
 ’s call\, proposals in the following fields will be accepted:\n• From 
 genetic associations to disease mechanisms\n• New molecular insights in 
 gender medicine\n• To the roots: Mathematics to address biology\n\nProje
 cts should be relevant to biomedical research with an ultimate aim to prov
 ide innovative healthcare solutions for patients. However\, proposals must
  be unrelated to a business relationship with Novartis.\n\n1) General term
 s of the grant:\nGrants are for a period of 18 months and up to a maximum 
 of CHF 180’000.\nIf positively evaluated\, a grant award is further cond
 itioned on reaching a written agreement between the Novartis Research Foun
 dation\, the applicant’s institution and the applicant on the following 
 terms and conditions:\n• Applicant’s institution endorses the project 
 and is accountable to administer the grant.\n• Applicant shall publish a
 ll results suitable for publication. In the spirit of FreeNovation\, the r
 esults shall be made available to the public without restricting use and f
 ree of charge (except for access fees of journals)\, and no patent applica
 tion will be filed for the results from the research conducted with the gr
 ant. • The grant activity shall include neither commercial activities no
 r be influenced by commercial interests\, and the planning and execution o
 f the grant activity shall be consistent with the principles of good scien
 tific practice.\n• All required notifications and required permissions\,
  licenses\, consents and/or approvals to perform the grant activity have t
 o be obtained.\n• Applicant provides a written and an oral report includ
 ing positive and negative results at the end of the funding period.\n\n2) 
 Eligiblity of applicants:\nApplicants are eligible to submit a proposal if
  they fulfill all requirements below:\n• The applicant has a completed d
 octoral degree or equivalent qualification\n• The applicant is an employ
 ee of a reputable healthcare or healthcare-related organization\, universi
 ty\, university hospital\, or university of applied sciences\, in Switzerl
 and\, for the duration of the project\n• The applicant has the agreement
  of applicant’s institution to apply for this grant and carry out the pr
 oject if it is funded.\n\nIt is possible to submit a proposal together wit
 h a co-applicant who also fulfills these requirements.\n\n3) Application r
 equirements:\nApplications must be written in English and include:\n• Su
 mmary of the research project (max. 200 words\; and one slide using the te
 mplate provided on the submission portal)\n• Background and motivation (
 max. 400 words)\n• Hypotheses and specific aims (max. 400 words)\n• No
 velty and potential application if successful (max. 400 words)\n• Descri
 ption of “truth telling” experiments\, i.e.\, hypotheses testing exper
 iments that will be conducted within the funding period and that will indi
 cate whether the original idea is valid or not (max. 400 words)\n\nApplica
