 ss microbial biodiversity\, with an emphasis on phytoplankton. I will star
 t off by discussing the experimental evolution of diversity. What are the 
 selection mechanisms that drive diversification from a homogenous beginnin
 g and how is this diversity maintained in ecological interactions? Specifi
 cally I will look at the role of environmental heterogeneity in providing 
 the opportunity for biodiversity. Then I move on to deep Alpine lakes and 
 discuss how phytoplankton communities come together. What are the drivers 
 of community assembly? And also here\, what is the role of a structured en
 vironment? I will address these questions at different time scales\, from 
 the decadal to the (sub)daily scale. Finally I want to present new develop
 ments in the automated\, high frequency monitoring of lakes.
