DESCRIPTION:Prof. Mutian Niu\, Institute of Agricultural Sciences\, Depart
ment of Environmental Systems Science\, ETHZ\nAbstract:\nRuminants are uni
quely able to convert human inedible plant biomass into high-quality prote
in\, playing a critical role in meeting global nutritional needs and provi
ding economic opportunities for millions of people. However\, they emit me
thane (CH4)\, a potent greenhouse gas\, primarily from rumen fermentation.
Enteric CH4 accounts for the majority of CH4 emissions from livestock. As
sessing the efficacy of CH4 mitigation strategies and understanding how ru
men microbial fermentation works are crucial for improving environmental s
ustainability in dairy farming.\n\nShort Biography:\nMutian Niu is Assista
nt Professor of Animal Nutrition at Institute of Agricultural Sciences\, a
t Department of Environmental Systems Science\, at ETH Zurich. His researc
h program is focusing on feed and feeding\, and nutrient utilization of da
iry cows. For example\, recent work from my group aims at improving rumen
fermentation and mitigating enteric methane emissions in dairy cows.\n
