 nTrapped-ions are among the most successful approaches to realizing quantu
 m computers\, however it remains a major challenge to scale these systems 
 up towards interconnected arrays of hundreds of ions. I will describe how 
 we are approaching these challenges using ion traps with integrated photon
 ics\, as well as moving from radio-frequency trapping to micro-fabricated 
 Penning traps\, which looks favourable from the perspective of realizing f
 lexibly reconfigurable 2-dimensional arrays.
