 ading figure to give a lecture tied to global issues in their area of spec
 ialization. This year\, we have the great pleasure of welcoming Celeste Sa
 ulo\, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).\n\

 _______________________________________\n\nThe “Global Issues” course:
   \nThis course is organized by the College of Humanities and reaches all
  EPFL students in the first year of the Bachelor program. It provides an i
 nterdisciplinary perspective on six current themes: food\, climate\, commu
 nication\, energy\, mobility\, and health.\n\nEach course is taught by a p
 air of instructors\, including one expert in natural sciences and engineer
 ing and one expert in social and human sciences. In the second half of the
  semester\, the students work in teams to complete a project related to th
 e theme that they have selected\, which they present through a poster. The
  best poster from each group is recognized during this annual Grand Témoi
 n ceremony.\n_____________________________________________________________
 ___\n\nCeleste Saulo is the first female and South American Secretary-Gene
 ral of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Her four-year term beg
 an on 1 January 2024. Prof. Saulo launched her academic career as a teachi
 ng assistant in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires (UB
 A)\, where she earned an undergraduate degree in 1987 and a PhD in 1996. S
 he is today full professor at the University of Buenos Aires and research 
 scientist at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research.\n
 \nHer extensive teaching experience is in the areas of numerical weather p
 rediction\, atmosphere dynamics and thermodynamics\, mesoscale meteorology
 \, cloud dynamics and cloud microphysics. Her scientific career specialize
 d in numerical weather prediction\, ensemble forecasting\, data assimilati
 on\, short-to-medium range prediction and predictability\, land-atmosphere
  interactions and the study of heavy precipitating systems in southern Sou
 th America.\n\nHer focus over the last few years has been on interdiscipli
 nary problems such as wind energy production\, climate services for agricu
 ltural applications and early warning systems.
