DESCRIPTION:Álvaro Sevilla-Buitrago\nCan we approach the history of urban
ization and spatial politics in a way that is both faithful to the predica
ment of vulnerable communities and operative to ongoing emancipatory proje
cts? Can these narratives sustain a theory that speaks to broader analyses
of social change and struggles for democracy? This lecture presents an at
tempt to address these questions by focusing on the speaker’s recent boo
k\, Against the Commons: A Radical History of Urban Planning. Tracing the
struggle for the commons over three centuries\, this book examines the rol
e of spatial politics in the development of capitalism and the decollectiv
ization of society. The talk will offer an overview of the conceptual fram
ework and historical arc of the book\, paying particular attention to its
epistemological premises and political implications. The seminar is intend
ed as an invitation to discuss the conditions that can turn spatial resear
ch into a foundation for an alternative theory of urbanization and an agen
da of social transformation.\n\nÁlvaro Sevilla-Buitrago is Associate Prof
