DESCRIPTION:Yefei Yang (UNFoLD\, EPFL)\nAbstract The shedding of vortices
in the wake of cylindrical structures leads to structural vibrations\, si
gnificant increases in drag forces\, and aeroacoustic noise issues.\nIntro
ducing span-wise geometric disturbances to the nominally two-dimensional b
ase form of a uniform cylinder is an effective method to control vortex sh
edding. We focus on the vortex shedding patterns in the wake of these span
-wise varied cylinders\, especially the dislocation phenomenon at the inte
rfaces of vortices from different span-wise cells. The automatic identific
ation and extraction of dislocation occurrences are achieved by several no
vel approaches based on flow visualizations. We classify the extracted dis
locations into different modes. The effects of different modes on vortex s
hedding patterns are further analyzed based on the proper orthogonal decom
position method and two-dimensional Fast Fourier Transform analysis. The r
esearch holds significant promise for advancing our understanding of vorte
x dislocations and enabling effective control strategies in potential engi
neering applications.\n\nBio Yefei Yang is a visiting PhD student in the
Unsteady Flow Diagnostics Laboratory (UNFoLD) at EPFL\, since March 2023.
His research focuses on the wake dynamics of flow past cylindrical structu
res. Yefei Yang obtained his master diploma in civil engineering from Harb
in Institute of Technology in China and continued his PhD studies there.
