DESCRIPTION:Prof. Morwaread Farbood from New York University\nThis talk d
escribes a method of using algorithmic composition to better understand ae
sthetic preferences for musical structures. The idea is to impose certain
constraints on the music generation process that might make the music more
coherent. Two types of constraints are explored: the first incorporates a
spects of Huron’s (2013) theory of repetition and the second involves us
ing tension profiles that align with structural boundaries in the generate
d music.\n\n© 2024 EPFL CDH DCML\n\n\n\nMorwaread Farbood is an Associate
Professor and Associate Director of Music Technology in the Department of
Music and Performing Arts Professions at New York University. She is also
affiliated with the Max Planck/NYU Center for Language\, Music\, and Emot
ion (CLaME) and the NYU Music and Audio Research Laboratory (MARL). Her re
search focuses on understanding and modeling real-time aspects of music li
stening. She has examined how emergent phenomena such as tonality and music
al tension are experienced by listeners and\, in conjunction\, developed c
omputer-assisted composition systems that utilize cognitive models for mus
 ic analysis and generation.\n
