DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nikola Sander & Dr. Sebastian Klüsener\, Federal Institut
 e for Population Research (BiB)\, Wiesbaden\, Germany\nLecture series in U
rban Demography organized by the URBDEMO LAB EPFL-ENAC-IA\n\nThe Urban Dem
ography Lab at EPFL has the pleasure to invite you to the next lecture in
a series of conferences on population dynamics and urban change in Switzer
land and globally.\n\n"Internal migration\, population ageing and regional
disparities in Germany”\nPresenter: Dr. Nikola Sander & Dr. Sebastian K
 lüsener\, Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB)\, Wiesbaden\, G
ermany\n\nAbstracts:\nThe talk by Nikola Sander focuses on internal migrat
ion and regional disparities in Germany. Drawing on data from the German p
opulation register on annual migration flows between 400 counties\, we dis
cuss how the intensity and spatial patterns of internal migration have cha
nged since 1991. Results show that the COVID‐19 pandemic was associated
with a 5% drop in the intensity of inter‐county migration in 2020 compar
ed to the previous year\, with significant variation across age. The pande
mic was also associated with an upsurge in net migration losses for the la
rgest cities\, driven by fewer inflows of young adults and continuing outf
lows of families. The lecture also discusses the ways in which internal mi
gration shapes regional population change. For example\, migration between
East and West Germany upon reunification\, as well as rural-urban movemen
ts also had a strong impact on regional population sex ratios. \n\nSebast
ian Klüsener will talk about population ageing in Germany with a focus on
spatial disparities in trends\, challenges and opportunities. He will pre
sent regional projections which show that the intensity of the ageing proc
ess varies systematically across the urban-rural gradient. Another focus w
ill be on urban-rural disparities in mortality and implications for health
care provision. This includes a recent study which investigates why morta
lity due to heart attacks is higher in rural compared to urban areas.\n\nS
hort biographies:\nNikola Sander is research director at the Federal Insti
tute for Population Research (BiB)\, Wiesbaden\, Germany\, where she leads
the research division on Migration & Mobility. She is a leading expert in
the field of internal migration and the visualisation of migration. Her r
esearch focusses on internal and international migration and its impact on
regional population change.\n\nSebastian Klüsener is research director a
t the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB)\, Wiesbaden\, German
y where he heads the research department on Ageing\, Mortality and Populat
ion Dynamics. He is a lecturer at the University of Cologne and guest prof
essor at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas\, Lithuania. Sebastian K
lüsener is a leading expert in the field of spatial demography. His main
research interests focus on population dynamics and mortality trends.\n\n\
