DESCRIPTION:Moritz Gleich and Sarine Waltenspül\nIn this presentation\,
media scholars Moritz Gleich and Sarine Waltenspül will present and discu
ss their recently published books\, exploring the proximity that exists be
tween architecture and media studies.\n\nMoritz Gleich will present Inhabi
ted Machines (Birkhauser\, 2023). Around 1800\, one of the most influentia
l architectural concepts of the last 250 years emerged – that of built s
paces as machines. Dissected and scrutinized by later writers\, the notion
of the architectural machine has enjoyed significant currency. But could
the modern interpretation of the historical term be too narrow? Taking the
  themes of domestic climate\, morality\, and comfort\, this in-depth and r
ichly illustrated study examines the evidence afresh – with nuanced yet
surprising results.\n\nFor her part\, Sarine Waltenspül will present Mode
lle im Film (Diaphanes\, 2024). Cinematographic models can be found in fil
ms of almost every genre and era\, whether due to the unavailability of li
fe-size objects\, budgetary constraints\, or simply fetishism. Despite th
eir enduring presence in the history of cinema\, scale models have often r
emained invisible - not only in the films themselves\, but also in film h
istoriography. What might a history of cinema look like that focuses on sm
all\, seemingly marginal\, and mostly invisible material objects instead o
 f great directors\, expensive films\, ingenious inventions\, and much-quo
 ted theories?\n\n
