DESCRIPTION:Prof. Franck Perez\, Institut Curie\, Paris (FR)\nWEEKLY EPFL
BIOE TALKS SERIES (sandwiches provided)\n\nAbstract:\nTo regulate their ho
meostasis – to exchange signals with the extracellular environment or mi
grate for example – cells need to address particular proteins and lipids
toward specific compartments in a tightly controlled way. Golgi-dependent
trafficking plays an essential role in these processes but although our k
nowledge about the mechanisms of intra-Golgi transport and sorting has dra
matically increased over the past two decades\, the underlying complexity
of transport routes\, in term of mechanism and dynamics\, is only starting
to emerge.\n\nOver the years\, we developed several versatile assays to m
onitor and quantify transport of cargos to the cell surface like the RUSH
assay and the CATCHFIRE system that brings powerful ways to study and pert
urb cell dynamics in real-time. Recently\, we applied these set of tools t
o understand better how the cell surface PD-L1 is translocated in the secr
etory pathway and transported to the cell surface. We also exploited our t
rafficking assays to develop novel translational approaches\, screen for i
nhibitory molecules and and set-up tunable cell-based therapies.\n\n\nBio:
\nFranck Perez is Research Director at CNRS and Chairman of the "Cell Biol
ogy and Cancer" Unit of the Institut Curie in Paris. His group is studying
intracellular trafficking with an important focus on the development of n
ew methods and tools for Cell Biology studies. For example\, he developed
at the Institut Curie the use of automated cellular screening and co-found
ed a High Content screening platform (BioPhenics\, directed by Elaine del
Nery). In addition\, his group created a novel trafficking assay and have
strongly invested on the development of recombinant antibodies for cell bi
ology. Notably\, with Sandrine Moutel he developed a novel antibody librar
y based on a humanized nanobody scaffold and created a therapeutic antibod
y platform to exploit and share these technologies.\n\nPrior to being recr
uited by CNRS\, F. Perez was Maître-Assistant at the University of Geneva
in Switzerland\, in the laboratory of Prof. T. E Kreis (1996-1999) where
he worked on microtubule dynamics and intracellular trafficking. F. Perez
received his PhD. in 1996 for his work in the laboratory of A. Prochiantz
at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris\, France) on the regulation of neu
roendocrine secretion and on the development of cell internalization pepti
des. Before his PhD.\, F. Perez graduated in Cell biology and Genetics at
the University Paris VII.\n\nF. Perez is an EMBO member\, author of hundre
d and fifty articles and over twelve patents. He is the co-founder of four
biotech companies (Emglev therapeutics (now Valour Bio)\, Honing Bioscien
ces\, The Twinkle Factory and Mnemo therapeutics).\n\n\nZoom link (with on
e-time registration for the whole series) for attending remotely: https://
 go.epfl.ch/EPFLBioETalks\n\n\nInstructions for 1st-year Ph.D. students who
are under EDBB’s mandatory seminar attendance rule:\nIN CASE you cannot
attend in-person in the room\, please make sure to\n\n	send D. Reinhard a
note well ahead of time (ideally before seminar day)\, informing that you
plan to attend the talk online\, and\, during seminar:\n	be signed in on
Zoom with a recognizable user name (not any alias making it difficult or i
mpossible to identify you).\n\nStudents attending the seminar in-person sh
ould collect a confirmation signature after the talk - please print your o
wn signature sheet beforehand (71 kB pdf available for download here). IMP
ORTANTLY: hang on to this sheet as no signature record is being kept by an
 yone else!
