DESCRIPTION:Alba Diz-Muñoz\, Ph.D.\, Research Group Leader Cell Biology a
nd Biophysics Unit - European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)\, Heidel
berg (DE)\nWEEKLY EPFL BIOE TALKS SERIES (sandwiches provided)\n\nAbstract
:\nMechanics lay at the heart of much of physiology and pathology. My labo
ratory at the EMBL in Heidelberg studies cellular force transduction and m
echanical signaling in animal cells and tissues by combining imaging and b
iophysical approaches with protein engineering. Our material science persp
ective has allowed us to obtain fundamental insights to enhance immunother
apy\, gate stem cell differentiation and improve cancer treatment. In this
talk I will show how animal cells exploit the remarkable biophysics that
emerge through the coupling of polymer physics and membrane mechanics to r
egulate cell morphogenesis\, immune migration\, and stem cell fate\, and s
how how our mechanical perspective can influence the clinic.\n\nBio:\n- Ph
D 2011\, Paluch and Heisenberg laboratories\, Max Planck Institute of Mole
cular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG)\, Dresden (DE).\n- Postdoctoral
research between the Fletcher and Weiner laboratories at UC Berkeley and U
CSF\, Bay Area\, CA (USA).\n- Since 2016\, Group Leader at European Molec
ular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)\, Heidelberg (DE).\n\nZoom link (with one-t
ime registration for the whole series) for attending remotely: https://go.

e under EDBB’s mandatory seminar attendance rule:\nIN CASE you cannot at
tend in-person in the room\, please make sure to\n\n	send D. Reinhard a no
te well ahead of time (ideally before seminar day)\, informing that you pl
an to attend the talk online\, and\, during seminar:\n	be signed in on Zoo
m with a recognizable user name (not any alias making it difficult or impo
ssible to identify you).\n\nStudents attending the seminar in-person shoul
d collect a confirmation signature after the talk - please print your own
signature sheet beforehand (71 kB pdf available for download here). IMPORT
ANTLY: hang on to this sheet as no signature record is being kept by anyon
