DESCRIPTION:Patrick Bouchain \nUrbanism of Hope: Reframing the Local and
Global Perspectives\n2024 Conference of the International Forum of Urbanis
m (IFoU)\nFor the first time in its history\, the 2024 IFoU Conference (12
-14 December 2024) will be organized as a collective event by five member
institutions: the University of Auckland\, NTU Taipei\, EPFL Lausanne\, TU
Delft\, and the University of Buenos Aires. Over the course of 3 days\, f
ive sessions will run in sequence\, each hosted by a participating institu
tion and dedicated to a subtheme. All the sessions will be accessible onli
ne and in-person in the different venues.\nIn the midst of a structural cr
isis worldwide that is characterized by natural disasters\, growing social
and economic tensions as well as increasing political\, even military\, c
onflicts\, the conference will focus on attempts\, approaches\, and soluti
ons on local levels: to what extent initiatives on a local level can comba
t or reduce the impact of environmental disasters\, improve local resilien
cy\, stimulate the local economy and social integration\, bridge political
  contradictions\, and overcome fragmentation\, segregation\, and separatio
n.\nTo investigate possibilities and opportunities of an "Urbanism of Hope
"\, EPFL proposes as topic: \n\nLocal resiliency: Crisis and catastrophe
 s as laboratories of local/global innovation\, adaption and socio-ecologic
al change\n\nThe EPFL session will investigate ways to deal with natural a
nd other disasters on a local level on different time horizons: before\, d
uring\, and after the crisis. Preparedness is possible and necessary in ur
ban planning and design\, but this would not contribute to improving livin
g conditions. Territories also require exploring new visions and long-term
strategies to reduce vulnerability and external dependency regarding ener
gy\, water\, food provision\, and social infrastructures. The EPFL seminar
session will include international PhDs and researchers' presentations (t
hrough a call for contributions)\, engaged in three parallel moderated pan
els. Keynotes and a collective round table will complete the event.
