DESCRIPTION:Sepand Kashani\nOur in-house experts Sepand Kashani will give
a workshop on Image Reconstruction 101: Computational Methods & Tools duri
ng our next imaging lunch. Open to all EPFL PhD students and Postdocs!\n\n
In many scientific and engineering fields\, direct observation of the ph
ysical processes of interest is not possible. Instead\, we rely on sensors
to capture indirect measurements which are then used to reconstruct the q
uantity of interest. This reconstruction process combines sensor data wit
h an understanding of the physics underlying the measurement process to "i
mage" or visualize what cannot be directly observed.\n\nDespite the divers
ity of measurement apparatuses and modalities (e.g.\, radio waves\, visibl
e light\, X-rays)\, the underlying physical models in imaging problems fal
l into a few common categories.\n\nThis means that many imaging problems s
hare common mathematical principles and can be addressed with a set of cor
e computational techniques.\n\nThe goal of this lecture is to distill the
basics of image reconstruction to PhD students and postdocs so that they c
an tackle their own imaging tasks.\n\nWe will introduce some computational
tools to perform image reconstruction and demonstrate their application t
hrough examples in different modalities\, including CT\, visible light\, a
nd radio wave imaging.\n\nTime permitting\, we will also give a glimpse of
more advanced topics such as large-scale imaging.\n\nLearning Objectives\
n    - Understand the main categories of image reconstruction methods.\n
     - Learn how to formulate an imaging task as a reconstruction problem
and solve it effectively using computational tools.\n\nPre-requisites\n
    - This is a beginner-level lecture.\n    - Familiarity with Python/N
umPy.\n    - Basic knowledge of linear algebra.\n\nRegistration required
\n\nAbout the Imaging Lunches: Once per month\, the EPFL Center for Imagi
ng organises an event dedicated to all PhD students and postdocs working w
ith/in imaging. Discuss the latest advances in imaging. Connect with imagi
ng peers. Learn about popular imaging tools!
