DESCRIPTION:Paul Spirakis\nPresident of the Computer Technology Institute
 & Press "Diophantus"\nFull Professor at Patras University\nAbstract\nInter
net  (and the Web) is perhaps the most influential artifact of our times.
The talk examines some possible scientific tools and theories  that cou
ld help in analyzing\nthe antagonism and cooperation in such a system. Gam
e Theory has been proposed to be such a tool. We discuss the notion of Equ
ilibria \, their computation\nand approximations \, the notion of Selfish
Systems\, and some measures of quality of Equilibria such as the prices of
Anarchy and Stability. The talk also discusses inefficient proofs of exis
tence\, limitations to rational behaviour\, and the dynamics of Selfish Sy
stems. The main claim of the talk is that\, perhaps\, a new Science is eme
rging out of such considerations.\n\nBiography\nPaul Spirakis obtained his
PhD from Harvard University\, in 1982. He is currently the President of t
he Computer Technology Institute & Press “DIOPHANTUS” and a Full Profe
ssor in Patras University\, Greece. Paul Spirakis has seriously affected t
he growth of the Computer Technology Institute & Press “DIOPHANTUS”\,
which is now a major organization. Was acknowledged between the top 50 sci
entists worldwide in Computer Science with respect to “The best Nurturer
s in Computer Science Research”\, published by B. Kumar and Y.N. Srikant
\, ACM Data Mining\, 2005. His research interests include Algorithms and C
omplexity and interaction of Complexity and Game Theory. Paul Spirakis has
extensively published in most of the important Computer Science journals
and most of the significant refereed conferences. He was elected unanimous
ly as one of the two Vice Presidents of the Council of the EATCS. He is a
member of Academia Europaea\, a member of the ACM Europe Council and has b
een appointed as a Member of the Executive Body of the Polytechnic Univers
ity of Cyprus. Paul Spirakis is a high level consultant for the Greek Mini
stry of Education. Paul Spirakis has gained many European competitive rese
arch funds and has served in several scientific bodies of the EU.
