DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daan Hein Alsem\, Director of Research\, Hummingbird Scien
tific\nOver the past two decades\, the rapid advancement of in-situ and op
erando high-resolution electron and x-ray microscopy has transformed mater
ials characterization. Hummingbird Scientific has played a pivotal role in
this evolution by developing a wide range of advanced in-situ specimen ho
lders\, enabling researchers to probe dynamic processes at the nanoscale.
This presentation will showcase the application of in-situ microscopy tech
niques across diverse experimental environments\, including optically enha
 nced liquid-electrochemical studies at high-resolution x-ray synchrotron b
eamlines and in transmission electron microscopy (TEM)\, high-temperature
 heating experiments\, electrical biasing\, micro-mechanical testing\, magn
etization of materials\, and plasma-driven nanostructure processing. These
methods have been instrumental in advancing research on battery materials
 \, nanomaterial synthesis\, thin-film mechanical behavior\, and magnetic s
witching. By demonstrating these cutting-edge capabilities\, this talk wil
l highlight how in-situ techniques are driving new insights into material
behavior and functionality.\n\nBio: Daan Hein Alsem is the Director of Res
earch at Hummingbird Scientific. He has more than two decades worth of res
earch and development experience with in-situ and analytical transmissio
 n electron microscopy\, electron microscopy-centered experimentation\, and
microscopy methods and hardware development. Before joining Hummingbird S
cientific in 2009\, after acquiring his M.S. in Applied Physics at the Uni
versity of Groningen (2002) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineeri
ng at UC Berkeley (2006)\, Dr. Alsem worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Natio
nal Laboratory’s National Center of Electron Microscopy. He previously a
lso held an Affiliate Assistant Professor position in the Department of Me
chanical Engineering at the University of Washington (2010-2015).\n
