DESCRIPTION:Furkan Ayhan\n The EPFL Photonics Chapter (EPC) is very ple
ased to announce and cordially invite you to our monthly ‘Pizza-Optics-
Beer’ (POB) seminar on March 6th\, at 18:15 in room ELD 120.\n\n\nT
his month we will have the pleasure to host Furkan Ayhan - doctoral assi
stant in Advanced Nano-electromechanical Systems Laboratory with the pres
entation entitled:\n\n        "Lithium niobate photonics for UV as
tronomical spectrograph calibration"\n\n\nThe talk will be followed by the
General Assembly of our association\, and the apero (pizza&beer).\n\nFor
organizational purposes (if you want to eat pizza!)\, please confirm your
participation using this Doodle.\nDon’t hesitate to extend the invita
tion to any postdoc and colleague!\n\nHope to see you there\,\nThe team of
the EPFL Photonics Chapter\n\n\n\nAbstract:\nPrecise astronomical spectro
scopy is a cornerstone of modern astrophysics\, enabling groundbreaking di
scoveries from exoplanet detection to fundamental tests of physics. The ac
curacy of these instruments relies on calibration sources\, and laser freq
uency combs\, commonly known as astrocombs\, have emerged as a promising a
lternative for achieving unprecedented wavelength precision. Extending cal
ibration into the ultraviolet (UV) regime with astrocombs\, however\, pres
ents significant challenges due to strong material dispersion and the intr
icacies of nonlinear frequency conversion.\nThis talk details how chip-int
egrated\, highly nonlinear lithium niobate photonic devices engineered wit
h nano-fabricated waveguides and tailored poling patterns enable efficient
UV astrocomb generation via cascaded harmonic processes. By combining a r
obust telecommunication-wavelength 18 GHz electro-optic comb with periodic
ally poled lithium niobate waveguides\, spectrograph calibration below 400
nm was demonstrated for the first time. This approach leverages the stron
g quadratic nonlinearity of lithium niobate and sub-micron modal confineme
nt to overcome dispersion and low pulse energy limitations\, paving the wa
y for enhanced calibration precision in next-generation astronomical spect
 rographs.\n\n\n\nYou don't know POBs?\nPOBs (Pizza-Optics-Beer) are monthl
y seminars organized by the student association EPFL Photonics Chapter.\nA
  PhD or a postdoc gives a 20-minutes presentation about his/her research i
n photonics. Discussions continue informally around pizza and beers!\nThe
event is free and open to anyone.\n\n\nWhat do we at EPFL Photonics Chapt
er?\nWe bring together photonics enthusiasts on campus through a variety o
 f events\, including monthly pizza-optics-beer seminars\, barbecues\, hike
s\, annual photonics workshop at ForumEPFL...\nAll this with the financial
support from EDPO\, Optica\, SPIE. and SwissPhotonics.\n\n\nJoin us at Ge
neral Assembly!\nThe General Assembly is open to everyone. Joining EPC as
a committee member is a great chance to have closer connections to your pe
ers in academia and industry. As a member\, you will have funding to invit
e speakers from around the world and organize social activities. You may a
lso benefit from travel grants and registration fee waivers. \n\n\nIf you
want to receive our newsletter (events\, updates\, and more...)\n\n© 202
4 EPFL\n\n\nWe thank the Doctoral Program in Photonics (EPDO)\, the Socie
ty of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE.)\, Optica and Swis
 sPhotonics for their support.\n \n\n
