CATEGORIES:Conferences - Seminars
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Paola Saccomandi\, Department of Mechanical Engineering
\, Politecnico di Milano\, Italy\n***Coffee and savory cake will be served
at 12:00 in the hall of BM 5202 - The seminar will exceptionally be held
at 12:15***\n\n\nAbstract\nFiber optic sensors (FOSs) offer key advantages
for life sciences\, medical monitoring\, and diagnostics. Their small siz
e (tens to hundreds of µm)\, flexibility\, high accuracy\, intrinsic safe
ty\, and immunity to electromagnetic fields make them ideal for healthcare
applications. They also enable continuous monitoring\, multiplexing\, and
easy integration into medical devices.\nDistributed and quasi-distributed
sensing allow multipoint measurements with a single interrogation unit\,
making FOSs valuable for monitoring biomechanical parameters\, pressure\,
and temperature\, particularly in cancer thermal therapies. The integratio
n of fiber optics with nanomaterials has led to advanced biosensors based
on surface plasmon and lossy mode resonance\, enabling the detection of pa
thological cells and harmful substances.\nThis lecture will present FOS ap
plications in healthcare\, including thermometry for oncological therapies
\, tissue thermal property characterization\, and prosthetic device monito
ring. Additionally\, 3D-printed patches with fiber Bragg grating sensors f
or wearable sports monitoring will be discussed\, along with FOS-based bio
sensing for detecting organic molecules and pollutants.\n\nShort biography
\nProf. Paola Saccomandi earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2014
from Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma\, and completed her postdoctora
l studies at the Institute of Image-Guided Surgery of Strasbourg. She is c
urrently an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano’s Department of
Mechanical Engineering and leads the Laboratory of Measurements for Biome
dical Applications. Her research focuses on light-based tumor treatments a
nd monitoring\, fiber optic sensors\, and thermal and biomechanical measur
ements.\nShe is the Scientific Responsible for three ERC projects\, one MS
CA postdoctoral fellowship\, and seven other national grants. Prof. Saccom
andi chairs the IEEE EMBS Technical Community on Therapeutic Systems & Tec
hnologies and the Women in Sensors (WiSe) Committee. She is also IEEE Wome
n in Engineering-Italy vice-chair and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for I
EEE Sensors Council.\nSince 2023\, she has been listed among the world’s
top 2% scientists\, and she has received multiple awards\, including Prem
 io Italia Giovane.\n
