DESCRIPTION:Prof. Javad Lavaei\, Industrial Engineering and Operations Re
search\, University of California\, Berkeley\nAbstract: To improve the ef
ficiency\, resiliency\, and sustainability of power systems and to address
climate change issues\, the operation of power systems is becoming data c
entric. Major operational problems\, such as security-constrained optimal
power flow\, contingency analysis\, and transient stability analysis\, rel
y on the knowledge extracted from sensory data. The manipulation of the da
ta by a malicious actor can tamper with the operation of the grid\, whose
consequences are catastrophic physical damages to the equipment and cascad
ing failures. Data-driven operation goes beyond power systems and applies
to driverless cars and many other applications. In this talk\, we first di
scuss the vulnerability of complex systems to cyberattacks and faults\, an
d then study how to learn the model of a complex system in an adversarial
environment and detect possible attacks simultaneously. We develop differe
nt types of attack detection algorithms and learning mechanisms and demons
trate their performances on real-world data. We show that it is possible t
o learn the model of a complex dynamical system in finite time even when t
he system is under attack at almost all times.\n\nBiography: Javad Lavaei
is an Associate Professor at the University of California\, Berkeley. He
has won several awards\, including the Presidential Early Career Award for
Scientists and Engineers given by the White House\, DARPA Young Faculty A

ditor of the IEEE Systems Journal and has served on the editorial boards o
f the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control\, IEEE Transactions on Contro
