DESCRIPTION:Prof. Maryam Kamgarpour\, Systems Control And Multiagent Optim
ization Research (SYCAMORE)\, Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IGM)\,
School of Engineering (STI)\, EPFL\nAbstract: Modern control applications
increasingly involve decision-making in complex\, interactive environments
  — such as intelligent transportation systems\, smart power grids\, and
assistive robotics. To enable reliable automation in these domains\, it is
crucial to account for uncertainties arising from model complexity and su
bsystem interactions. These challenges lie at the intersection of control\
 , learning theory\, and game theory.\n\nIn this talk\, I will spotlight re
cent advances in stochastic control\, reinforcement learning\, and multi-a
gent control that address these issues. I will present our technical contr
ibutions toward learning safe controllers and computing equilibria in mult
i-agent settings. The talk will showcase showcase examples of applying the
developed theory to the real world and conclude by highlighting open rese
arch challenges.\n\nBiography: Maryam Kamgarpour is a professor in the Sch
ool of Engineering\, Department of Mechanical Engineering at École Polyte
chnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Prior to joining EPFL\, she held fa
culty positions at the University of British Columbia and ETH Zürich. She
received her PhD in Engineering from the University of California\, Berke
ley\, and her BASc from the University of Waterloo\, Canada.\n\nHer resear
ch focuses on stochastic and multi-agent learning and control\, driven by
autonomy challenges in intelligent transportation systems\, robotics\, and
power grids. She was awarded the European Union Starting Grant (2016-2021
) for advancing control and game theory methods to integrate renewable ene
rgy into power systems.\n\nHer contributions have been recognized with awa
rds\, including the NASA Aeronautics High Potential Individual Award (2010
) for her work on safe and fuel-efficient aircraft trajectory design in co
llaboration with NASA\, and the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Sy
stems Outstanding Paper Award (2022). In 2024\, she received the prestigio
us European Control Award and was elected an ELLIS Fellow. She serves as a
n Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. \n\nMar
yam Kamgarpour is passionate about the mathematical foundations of autonom
ous systems and about mentoring students to explore and build upon these f
 oundations.\n
