DESCRIPTION:Jose Antonio Vasquez Porto Viso\nThe EPFL Photonics Chapter
(EPC) is very pleased to announce and cordially invite you to our monthly
‘Pizza-Optics-Beer’ (POB) seminar on May 8th\, at 18:15 in roo
m CO 122.\n\nThis month we will have the pleasure to host Jose Antonio V
asquez Porto Viso - doctoral assistant in Laboratory of Systems Biology a
nd Genetics with the presentation entitled:\n\n"Quantitative imaging of li
ving cells using digital holographic microscopy for lab-on-a-chip applicat
ions"\n\nFor organizational purposes (if you want to eat pizza!)\, please
confirm your participation using this Doodle.\nDon’t hesitate to exte
nd the invitation to any postdoc and colleague!\n\nHope to see you there\,
\nThe team of the EPFL Photonics Chapter\n\n\n\nAbstract:\nSingle cells ar
e the fundamental unit of life. Their physical appearance\, phenotype\, an
d molecular composition are closely related to their functioning. Using li
ght to take a closer look at single cells has been the work of microscopy
for centuries. However\, obtaining contrast from low-absorbing\, phase obj
ects such as single cells has proven difficult without the use of exogenou
s chemical staining dyes that could affect the underlying biology and crea
 te toxicity. In my work\, I am using a label-free-no-stain technique\, dig
ital holographic microscopy (DHM)\, to maximize the extraction of quantita
tive phenotypic features from single cells in a microfluidic chip for futu
re coupling with lab-on-a-chip applications\, such as cell sorting and gen
 etic sequencing.\n\n\n\nYou don't know POBs?\nPOBs (Pizza-Optics-Beer) are
monthly seminars organized by the student association EPFL Photonics Chap
 ter.\nA PhD or a postdoc gives a 20-minutes presentation about his/her res
earch in photonics. Discussions continue informally around pizza and beers
!\nThe event is free and open to anyone.\n\n\nWe thank the Doctoral Progra
m in Photonics (EPDO)\, the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engi
neers (SPIE.)\, Optica and SwissPhotonics for their support.
