DESCRIPTION:Prof. Alessandro Bottaro : http://www.dicat.unige.it/bottaro/i
ndex.html\nThe behavior of a flexible filament anchored to the rear end of
a fixed rigid bluff body is investigated numerically for intermediate Rey
nolds numbers. For sufficiently short and rigid filaments\, asymmetric per
iodic flapping motion emerges from the intrinsically symmetric dynamics\,
resulting in net lift force and reduction of mean drag force. We observe t
hat this phenomenon is accompanied to a buckling instability in the recirc
ulation region of the von Karman wake. To sustain compression the short fi
lament creates a vortical structure on one of its sides\, which then break
s symmetry and counter-acts the von Karman vortices in the recirculation z
one.\nConceptually\, this investigation demonstrates that spontaneous symm
etry-breaking of a single filament can alter bluff body wakes favorably. T
he work has been carried out together with Shervin Bagheri (KTH\, Stockhol
 m) and Andrea Mazzino (University of Genova).
