DESCRIPTION:Prof. Seth Putterman\, Department of Physics & Astrophysics\,
University of California\, Los Angeles\nSonoluminescence is a paradigm of
transdisciplinary physics. Low amplitude sound energy entering a fluid spo
ntaneously focuses by 12 orders of magnitude to create a flash of light an
d a new phase of matter. The degree to which the energy density of a conti
nuous system can concentrate in off-equilibrium motion has not been determ
ined by theory. Additional examples processes that concentrate energy dens
ity include: tribo-electrification where the power applied to peel  tape
is efficiently transduced into a flux of x-ray photons that can expose an
image in a few seconds\, and ferroelectricity where heating a crystal by 4
0C generates nuclear fusion in a deuterated environment.  The talk conclu
des with  pot-shots at the reductionist approach to physics.
