DESCRIPTION:Prof. Miki Ebisuya\, Physics of Life\, TU Dresden (DE)\nWEEKLY
EPFL BIOE TALKS SERIES (sandwiches provided)\n\nAbstract:\nDifferent anim
al species operate at distinct biological tempos. Our group investigates t
he mechanisms underlying species-specific biological tempo using stem cell
-based in vitro models.\nSo far\, we have successfully recaplitulated the
segmentation clock—oscillatory gene expression during early development
—using pluripotent stem cells from six mammalian species\, including hum
an\, mouse\, marmoset\, and rhinoceros. Our findings indicate that these d
ifferences arise from variations in the kinetics of the segmentation clock
mechanism\, including species-specific protein degradation rates and dela
ys in gene expression processes. Moreover\, we have shown that several met
abolic inhibitions selectively impact these kinetics.\nExpanding our explo
ration of biological tempo\, we are now studying species-specific heart ra
tes by deriving cardiac pacemaker cells from our stem cell zoo.\n\n\nBio:\
