DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Christophe Copéret\,\nHead of Dep. of Chemistry and
  Applied Biosciences\,\nETH Zürich  \nAbstract: Keywords: Single sites\
, Single Atom Catalysts\, Nanoparticles\n\nMost efficient chemical process
es used in industry rely on heterogeneous catalysis. While the search for
more sustainable processes and the changes in environmental policies impos
e the continuous development of more efficient catalysts\, we have current
ly little understanding of the structure of the actives in these processes
. Hence\, due to their inherent complexity\, heterogeneous catalysts have
been mostly developed empirically.\nHere\, we will show how constructing a
ctive sites\, one atom at a time on surfaces\, enables molecular-level und
erstanding and implementation of rational approaches for the improvement o
f catalytic processes. We will first illustrate how this approach enables
to generate selective single-site catalysts. We will next show how from th
ese isolated (single) sites\, one can generate and understand far more com
plex systems such as supported nanoparticles\, where interfaces\, alloying
\, etc… play a critical role. This lecture will be developed around thes
e themes and will show how the development of advanced characterization to
ols augmented by computational approaches can provide useful information t
o bridge the gap between fundamental and applied (industrial) catalysis.\n
\nBio: Christophe Copéret has been Professor of Surface and Interface Ch
emistry at the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chem
istry and Applied Biosciences\, since 2010. He was born in Belleville\, Fr
ance in 1970. Christophe Copéret completed his degree in chemistry and ch
emical technology at the University of Lyon in France in 1992. He obtained
a doctorate from the Purdue University in West Lafayette\, IN\, USA in Au
gust 1996 before working as a postdoc for a year under professor K. B. Sha
rpless at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla\, California\, USA. From
1998 to 2002\, he was an assistant professor at the University of Lyon. In
2002\, he became a professor at the University of Lyon\, where he worked
for another eight years. From 2008 to 2010\, he was Research Director of t
he CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique). Christophe Copére
t was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Catalysis (2011-2015)\, and th
e Co-Editor in Chief of Helvetica Chimica Acta\, the journal of the Swiss
Chemical Society (2016-2021). Since 2022\, he is an Associate Editor of th
e Journal of the American Chemical Society\, JACS.
