DESCRIPTION:Dr. Serina L. Robinson\, Eawag\nAbstract:\nThe use of fluori
nated compounds is widespread\, with fluorine present in over 50% of agroc
hemicals and 25% of pharmaceuticals. Many of these substances persist in a
nd contaminate the environment after their use. Despite the exceptional st
ability of the carbon-fluorine bond\, microbial enzymes capable of transfo
rming fluorinated compounds are known\, and more are being discovered. How
ever\, accurately identifying these enzymes and their associated biotransf
ormation pathways directly from microbiome sequencing data remains a chall
enge. This talk will focus on my group’s research identifying and engine
ering of microbial enzymes that interact with fluorinated compounds and tr
aining predictive models to learn molecular features driving these interac
tions. This aids future prediction of contaminant biotransformation potent
ial from microbiome data and advances our understanding of microbial inter
actions with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).\n\n\n\nBiography:
\nSerina L. Robinson is a group leader in the Department of Environmental
Microbiology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technol
ogy (Eawag) where her group investigates how microbes contribute to the tr
ansformation of chemical contaminants in the environment. Previously\, sh
e was an ETH Zurich postdoctoral fellow advised by Prof. Dr. Jörn Piel. S
he obtained her PhD in Microbiology and MSc in Bioinformatics and Computat
ional Biology from the University of Minnesota\, Minneapolis\, USA (adviso
 r: Larry Wackett).\n
