DESCRIPTION:In today's era of Big Data\, scientific progress increasingly
relies on collaboration and shared resources. Open science makes a wide ra
nge of research outputs—publications\, research data\, software\, hardwa
 re\, models\, tools\, biobanks\, and more—accessible and reusable\, enab
ling researchers to build on each other’s work efficiently and transpare
ntly. Yet\, current measures of progress in open science remain largely fo
cused on open access publications\, overlooking the many other contributio
ns that sustain research communities and drive scientific impact.\n\nOpen
Pulse is here to change that.\n\nWhat is Open Pulse\, and why does it matt
er?\nOpen Pulse is an open research data toolset developed by EPFL Open Sc
ience and the SDSC. It automates the discovery and monitoring of open-sour
ce software outputs and their impact\, laying the groundwork for making th
ese contributions visible\, measurable\, and valued within research instit
utions. Unlike traditional metrics that focus on volume—such as download
s or citations—Open Pulse emphasizes community engagement and collaborat
ion as the true measures of impact. By introducing meaningful quality metr
ics\, it reveals which open-source software projects thrive\, how communi
ties interact\, and the level of FAIRness\, offering a clearer picture of
 open-source software contributions’ true value.\n\nWhat you'll do:\nDuri
ng a focused half-day sprint\, you will join an interdisciplinary team of
3–4 participants to dive into the Open Pulse interface and tackle themed
challenges—or pursue your own project idea related to open-source softw
are. For example\, you might:\n\n	Identify the most active open-source sof
tware communities at EPFL and uncover what drives them.\n	Explore how lice
nse choices shape open-source software contributions.\n	Evaluate which ope
n-source software metrics best reflect the values and dynamics of your sci
entific community.\n\nYour team can prototype dashboards\, interactive not
ebooks\, simulations\, or other creative outputs that show how Open Pulse
metrics can inform research evaluation\, strengthen engagement\, and guide
institutional strategy. You’ll have the opportunity to present your sol
ution in a lightning demo session\, receive practical guidance and peer fe
edback\, and celebrate standout contributions during a prize ceremony. \n
 \nWho should participate?\nWe welcome researchers\, software developers\,
 science administrators\, data scientists\, research software engineers\, I
T & library professionals\, and anyone involved or interested in producing
 \, maintaining\, or assessing open-source software in research.\n\nNo codi
ng expertise is required. Conceptual\, strategic\, and community insights
are just as valuable as technical skills. If you care about how open-sourc
e software is recognized\, evaluated\, or sustained in academia\, this is
your chance to shape the future of open science.\n\nSpots are limited. Reg
ister now and be part of the Open Pulse launch! \n\nFor more information\
