DESCRIPTION:Léa-Catherine Szacka\nLÉA-CATHERINE SZACKA \nPioneers of the
XXth Century: Gae Aulenti\, Ada Louise Huxtable\, Phyllis Lambert\n\nCrit
ic Ada Louise Huxtable and architects Gae Aulenti and Phyllis Lambert were
influential figures in architecture and design of the postwar period. Pio
neers in a male-dominated field and key actors in the transition from mode
rnism to postmodernism\, they diversified the architect’s tools to conqu
er the public spaces they designed. Opening the exhibition Crossed Histori
es at Archizoom\, this lecture traces the protagonists’ practices throug
h three themes that connect their parallel trajectories.\n\nThis lecture i
 s part of the School Lecture Series\n\nCOMMUNITY VOL.1 \nSeven exemplary p
rojects and case studies\n\nCommunity is an ambivalent concept. It involve
s both gathering through shared customs and exclusion. Some claim that inc
lusive communities do not exist. Recent history shows people more often un
ite through exclusion than inclusion. However\, communities are not sealed
. Philosopher Roberto Esposito explains that community 'is not a property
or territory to defend but a void\, a debt\, and a gift to others\, remind
ing us of our otherness.\n\nThis lecture series explores the topic of comm
unity through architecture. How does architecture explore\, define\, or en
able communities? Can architects collaborate directly with communities\, b
ypassing institutional entities? How can design convey a collective experi
ence? Seven emerging and established architectural figures respond to thes
e questions through their work\, which spans film\, exhibitions\, and comm
unitarian buildings.\n\nSave the dates and join us on Tuesday evenings!\n
