 ion and fracture of fibre-reinforced polymer composites under general ther
 mo-mechanical loading results in the need of expensive\, experimentally ba
 sed certification programs\, and in the non-optimal use of these materials
 .\nThis presentation will describe the efforts that have been conducted to
  develop enhanced analysis models for composite materials. Different lengt
 h scales for the representation of the mechanical response of  composite 
 materials will be discussed.\nThe availability of accurate analysis models
  has the potential to increase the design envelope of composite structures
 . Therefore\, some new concepts for advanced composites such as hybrid\, v
 ariable stiffness and ultra-thin composites will be presented.
