DESCRIPTION:Dr Martins Zaumanis\, Group Leader of Bituminous Materials at
Concrete and Asphalt laboratory\, EMPA\nAbstract\nAsphalt concrete is a ro
ad pavement material composed primarily from nonrenewable resources includ
ing mineral aggregates and petroleum-derived bitumen\, for which practical
substitutes are limited. The challenge\, therefore\, is not to replace th
ese materials entirely\, but to make their use more sustainable. In this p
resentation\, Dr. Martins Zaumanis will share his research results on stra
tegies to reduce the environmental footprint of asphalt concrete\, includi
ng advanced recycling techniques\, performance-based asphalt mixture desig
n\, and optimization of material use.\n\nBiography\nThe research of Martin
s Zaumanis is driven by the goal of integrating sustainability as a fundam
ental principle in the design of road pavement materials. He investigates
recycling of asphalt pavements\, explores the use of alternative and waste
materials in asphalt concrete production\, and works on asphalt productio
n and paving technologies that reduce environmental impact of construction
. His research integrates advanced mixture design methodologies\, performa
nce-based testing procedures\, and the use of machine learning to enable p
avement performance prediction. Dr. Zaumanis actively collaborates with in
dustry partners to promote effective implementation of the research result
 s in practice.
