DESCRIPTION:Dr Kedar Narayan\, National Cancer Institute\, NIH\, USA\nJoin
t seminar with the Dubochet Center for Imaging\, BioImaging and Optics Pl
atform and BioEM Facility. \n\nAbstract: Electron microscopy (EM) has
long been the gold standard for high resolution imaging of cellular ultras
tructure. Recent advances have extended EM to the third dimension\, allowi
ng “volume EM” to emerge as an exciting avenue to explore previously i
naccessible questions in biology\, especially when combined with correlati
ve methods. In spite of these developments\, volume EM has remained a most
ly descriptive science\, with a major hurdle being routine and large-scale
segmentation of features of interest from ever-growing image volumes. The
current artificial intelligence (AI) revolution has benefited research in
this space\, with several approaches showing promise when applied to 2D a
nd 3D EM data. Here I discuss recent work from the wet and dry lab sides o
f my group: I show examples of new biology revealed simply by imaging cell
s and tissue in 3D\, and I share our latest AI based solutions to segment
large numbers of organelles from these data. These advances open the door
to quantitative and statistically robust ultrastructural studies in cell b
iology.\n\nBio: Kedar Narayan leads the CCR volume EM (CvEM) group. He ha
 s a Ph.D. in immunology and a background in chemistry\, pathology\, biophy
sics and software engineering. Kedar’s work focuses on developing emergi
ng technologies for cellular imaging and deploying them to drive collabora
tive projects. At CvEM\, these include FIB-SEM\, array tomography\, electr
on tomography and correlative imaging\, as well as powerful AI-based compu
tational strategies.\n\nThe seminar is followed by an aperitif. \n\nRegis
tration appreciated\nLook at our other events here
