DESCRIPTION:Prof. Lukasz Bugaj\, Department of Bioengineering\, Universit
y of Pennsylvania\, Philadelphia\, PA (USA)\nWEEKLY EPFL BIOE TALKS SERIE
 S (sandwiches provided)\n\nAbstract:\nRemote-controllable proteins allow a
high-resolution understanding of cell regulation through space and time.
I will highlight our recent discovery of a fungal protein that responds to
both light and temperature and our efforts to engineer these responses fo
r an array of new molecular probes\, with particular focus on purely tempe
rature-sensitive proteins for control of cells deep within opaque animal t
issues. I will also describe our recent development of the CluMPS\, a fluo
rescent biosensor of small protein complexes that would otherwise fall bel
ow the detection threshold of light microscopy. I will show how CluMPS rev
ealed the unexpected presence and dynamics of protein assemblies that driv
e cancer and the cell stress response.\n\n\nBio:\nLukasz Bugaj is an Assis
tant Professor in Bioengineering. He earned his BSE in Biomedical Engineer
ing at Johns Hopkins University. He then earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineerin
g with David Schaffer at Berkeley\, where he pioneered some of the first m
ethods for light-activated 'optogenetic' control of mammalian cell signali
ng. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Wendell Lim at UCSF\,
where he applied optogenetic technology to uncover functional signaling d
efects in cancer cells. The Bugaj Lab at Penn combines optogenetics and sy
nthetic biology to understand and engineer biological control\, including
within therapeutic cells.\n\n\nZoom link (with one-time registration for t
he whole series) for attending remotely: https://go.epfl.ch/EPFLBioETalks\
n\n\nInstructions for 1st-year Ph.D. students planning to attend this talk
\, who are under EDBB’s mandatory seminar attendance rule:\nIN CASE you
cannot attend in-person in the room\, please make sure to\n\n	send D. Rein
hard a note well ahead of time (ideally before seminar day)\, informing th
at you plan to attend the talk online\, and\, during seminar:\n	be signed
in on Zoom with a recognizable user name (not any alias making it difficul
t or impossible to identify you).\n\nStudents attending the seminar in-per
son should collect a confirmation signature after the talk - please print
your own signature sheet beforehand (69 kB pdf available for download here
). IMPORTANTLY: hang on to this sheet as no signature record is being kept
  by anyone else!
