DESCRIPTION:Dr. Georgios Mavromatidis\, Head of the Urban Energy Systems L
aboratory at EMPA and lecturer at ETH Zurich\nAbstract\nThe transition tow
ard low-carbon cities requires energy decisions that span technologies\, s
ectors\, and actors. This presentation examines how modeling and optimizat
ion can inform these decisions\, supporting the design of urban energy sys
tems that balance performance\, cost\, and environmental objectives. It di
scusses approaches for techno-economic planning at the building and distri
ct scale\, the integration of mobility and energy infrastructures\, and st
rategies for coordinated retrofitting and portfolio management. By linking
engineering analysis with policy and planning perspectives\, the talk ill
ustrates how analytical tools can translate system complexity of urban ene
rgy systems into actionable insights\, enabling more informed decisions in
  guiding sustainable urban transitions.\n\nShort biography\nDr. Georgios M
avromatidis is Head of the Urban Energy Systems Laboratory at Empa\, Swit
zerland\, and a lecturer at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on understan
ding and shaping the transformation of urban energy systems toward low-car
bon\, resilient\, and equitable futures. Combining technological\, economi
c\, and policy perspectives\, he develops modeling and optimization approa
ches that support strategic planning\, policy design\, and decision-making
under uncertainty. Working closely with cities\, utilities\, and policyma
kers\, he aims to bridge analytical research with practical implementation
in urban energy transitions. Dr. Mavromatidis holds a PhD in Urban Energy
Systems from ETH Zurich\, an MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures from Imper
ial College London\, and a Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering from Arist
otle University of Thessaloniki.\n\nFree sandwiches and beverages will be
 offered during the seminar.
