DESCRIPTION:Dr Martins Zaumanis\, Group Leader of Bituminous Materials at
Concrete and Asphalt Lab\, EMPA\nAbstract\nAsphalt concrete is a road pave
ment material composed primarily from nonrenewable resources including min
eral aggregates and petroleum-derived bitumen\, for which practical substi
tutes are limited. The challenge\, therefore\, is not to replace these mat
erials entirely\, but to make their use more sustainable. In this presenta
tion\, Dr. Martins Zaumanis will share his research results on strategies
to reduce the environmental footprint of asphalt concrete\, including adva
nced recycling techniques\, performance-based asphalt mixture design\, and
optimization of material use.\n\nBiography\nThe research of Martins Zauma
nis is driven by the goal of integrating sustainability as a fundamental p
rinciple in the design of road pavement materials. He investigates recycli
ng of asphalt pavements\, explores the use of alternative and waste materi
als in asphalt concrete production\, and works on asphalt production and p
aving technologies that reduce environmental impact of construction. His r
esearch integrates advanced mixture design methodologies\, performance-bas
ed testing procedures\, and the use of machine learning to enable pavement
performance prediction. Dr. Zaumanis actively collaborates with industry
partners to promote effective implementation of the research results in pr
 actice.
