  systems are increasingly used to support human work in deeply social and 
 creative contexts like education\, social work\, healthcare\, and design. 
 To ensure that AI truly has a positive impact in these settings\, it is cr
 itical that AI systems are designed to bring out the best of human ability
 \, while also helping overcome human limitations. In my group’s research
 \, we explore how to design systems that combine complementary strengths o
 f humans and AI\, rather than simply automating activities that humans do 
 best or find personally meaningful. In this talk\, I will first overview o
 ur approach to research—from studying emerging challenges in AI-augmente
 d work\, to developing and evaluating novel technologies to address these 
 challenges. I will then share examples of our work across two themes: 1) D
 esigning effective human-AI systems\; and 2) Helping AI developers create 
 more human-centered AI. Finally\, I will discuss future research direction
 s\, focused on exploring more positive futures for AI-augmented work and p
 reparing humans to thrive in these futures.\n\nBio\nDr. Ken Holstein is an
  Assistant Professor of Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon Univ
 ersity\, where he directs the CoALA Lab (short for Co-Augmentation\, Co-Le
 arning\, & Collaborative AI). He is also a founding member of the CMU-NIST
  Cooperative Research Center on AI Measurement Science & Engineering. His 
 group studies how AI systems are currently developed and used to augment h
 uman work in real-world contexts\, and creates new tools and methods to im
 prove how AI is designed\, evaluated\, and used in practice. Throughout th
 eir research\, they combine approaches from various disciplines\, includin
 g human–computer interaction (HCI)\, AI & ML\, design\, learning science
 s\, and cognitive science. Their research has received awards at top-tier 
 venues in HCI\, learning sciences\, & responsible AI\, has impacted compan
 ies and public policy\, and has been featured by outlets such as PBS\, The
  Guardian\, Wired\, The New York Times\, and The Boston Globe.\n\nMore inf
