DESCRIPTION:By: Hugo Lefeuvre - University of British Columbia\nIC Facult
y candidate\n\nAbstract\nSoftware usages grow much faster than computing h
ardware. Paradoxically\, modern software systems make inefficient use of c
omputing resources: decades of feature creep have made them too generic to
perform well on any specific task.\nThese decades of growth have also mad
e systems fragile -- and frankly insecure\, glued together from countless
 components of diverse origins\, critical or confidential\, buggy\, risky\,
AI-generated\, or otherwise untrustworthy.\n\nThis talk will take the aud
ience on a journey at the intersection of systems and security.  I will g
ive an overview of my past and present works applying specialization and i
solation techniques to make systems more efficient and more trustworthy (U
nikraft\, FlexOS\, CHERIoT)\, demonstrating the shortcomings of these tech
niques and how to address them (CIVs\, SoK)\, and getting these advances d
eployed to better the real world. I will conclude with a forward-looking p
erspective on my research and impact plans towards achieving this vision o
f faster and more robust software systems.\n\nBio\nHugo Lefeuvre is a Post
doctoral Research Fellow at the University of British Columbia\, where he
researches topics at the intersection of systems and security. Earlier\, h
e was a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester and a Microsoft PhD
Research Fellow. His thesis was awarded the EuroSys Roger Needham PhD awar
d and the honorable mention for the SIGOPS Dennis M. Ritchie Doctoral Diss
 ertation Award.\n\nMore information
