DESCRIPTION:Giovanni De Micheli Denisa Constantinescu Manuel Cubero-Castan
Emmanuel Lanti Julia Paolini Miguel Peón Quirós XavierOuvrard\nIs AI p
art of the climate problem or the sustainability solution? In this hands-o
n workshop\, participants will explore its carbon footprint\, discover pra
ctical tools\, and co-design new pathways — including a visit to EPFL’
s EcoCloud facility.\n\nArtificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly e
nergy-intensive\, with datacenters projected to consume up to 10% of globa
l electricity by 2030. Racks alone may soon reach 1MW per unit\, raising u
rgent questions about the sustainability of AI infrastructure. The shift f
rom performance-driven to sustainability-driven datacenters presents multi
ple challenges — and opportunities.\n\nThis workshop explores these chal
lenges and highlights pathways toward sustainable AI. We will focus partic
ularly on the carbon footprint of datacenters\, while also examining how A
I itself can serve as an enabler of sustainability.\n\nThe session will al
ternate between short expert inputs and dynamic small-group discussions on
key questions. Participants will reflect on the dual role of AI — both
as part of the sustainability problem and as part of the solution.\n\nThe
workshop will introduce a new carbon assessment methodology developed at E
PFL and include a guided tour of the EcoCloud experimental facility\, wher
e cutting-edge technologies are being tested to reduce AI’s environmenta
l footprint.\n\nWe will conclude by inviting participants to co-create new
approaches and propose innovative paths for building sustainable AI syste
ms.\n\nTarget audience:\nThe workshop is designed for anyone interested in
  AI sustainability\, including datacenter providers\, AI practitioners\, p
olicymakers\, researchers\, and students who seek a holistic perspective o
 n sustainability.
