DESCRIPTION:Adrian Egli\, Institute of Medical Microbiology\, University o
f Zurich\nClose contact with companion animals can transmit zoonotic bacte
ria\, including Capnocytophaga spp.\, commensals of the canine/feline ora
l microbiota that can cause severe human infections\, especially in immuno
compromised hosts. This talk presents microbiological and genomic insights
from a global Capnocytophaga consortium\, focusing on species diversity\
, population structure\, and the open pangenome of C. canimorsus. Using wh
ole-genome sequencing linked to phenotypic susceptibility testing\, we ide
ntify acquired antimicrobial resistance genes in a subset of isolates\, in
cluding class D β-lactamases\, and demonstrate genotype–phenotype conco
rdance. We conclude with current efforts to establish standardized referen
ce AST conditions and ECOFFs/breakpoints to support mechanistic AMR studie
s and improve interpretation of susceptibility data in this fastidious pat
 hogen.
