DESCRIPTION:M. Frederick Moscatelli (PhD) - University of Vienna\nAbstract
:\n\nThe wave maps equation is a geometric\, nonlinear wave equation that
serves as a good toy model for more complicated wave equations\, such as t
he Einstein equations. For spherical targets there exists in each supercri
tical dimension an explicit solution to the wave maps equation that blows
up in finite time.\nUnder a certain symmetry assumption\, the stability of
this solution has been established within the last 15 years or so. In thi
s talk I will present the proof of stability without any symmetry assumpti
ons.\nThis is joint work with Roland Donninger.
