DESCRIPTION:Dr Andrea Zampiron\nDespite appearances\, and perhaps contrary
to intuition\, water flowing in rivers\, atmospheric currents\, and blood
flowing through the arteries of our body share many common features\, mak
ing them part of the same broader class known as wall-bounded flows. In th
is talk\, I will present my journey through different types of wall-bounde
d flows as they occur in both natural and engineered systems.\nI will show
how secondary currents in open-channel flow affect hydraulic resistance a
nd modify the flow structure. I will also discuss how water flows are domi
nated by large turbulent structures\, known as very-large-scale motions. F
inally\, I will present the most recent results of my research on blood fl
ow\, focusing on the effects of stents (mesh-like devices made of differen
t materials and inserted into stenotic arteries) on the flow structure.\n
