DESCRIPTION:Prof. Martin Albrecht\, Department of Chemistry\, Biochemistry
and Pharmaceutical Sciences\, University of Bern\n \nN-heterocyclic carb
enes have profoundly re-shaped the homogeneous catalysis landscape [1].\nW
hile initial focus has been directed on catalysis with precious metals (an
d has led to\nunfortunate terms like ‘super-phosphines’)\, more recent
efforts have addressed sustainability\naspects and aimed at utilizing Ear
th-abundant first row transition metals for catalyst\ndevelopment [2]. One
challenge in these endeavors roots in the hard-soft mismatch of the\nofte
n higher-valent transition metal and the carbene donor site\, which weaken
s the stability of\nthe M–C bond and may compromise catalyst integrity.
We will discuss different strategies to\nmeet this challenge and to develo
p efficient first row transition metal NHC catalysts for the\noxidation[3]
and for (intramolecular) amination of unactivated C–H bonds [4]\, inclu
ding the\nmechanistically informed improvement of their activity to beat c
urrent benchmarks.\nWe thank the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
for continuous support of this work.\nReferences\n[1] N-Heterocyclic Carbe
