DESCRIPTION:Prof. Martin McCoustra\, Heriot-Watt University\nOver 300 diff
erent chemical species have been reported in space. Many of these species
are relatively complex organic molecules. Increasingly\, experimental and
computational evidence supports the idea that the limits of complexity of
chemistry in space are driven by chemical processes occurring in and on so
lid materials. This presentation will look at the application of surface s
cience tools to exploring aspects of the physics and chemistry of processe
s on surfaces which are crucial to understanding the evolution of that com
plexity and linking it to our increasing understanding of remote environme
 nts.
