CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:The SWEET programme comprises two main funding instruments. Th
e first is the SWEET instrument\, through which seven calls for proposals
were published from 2020 to 2024 that resulted in ten consortia. The secon
d instrument is called SWEETER (SWiss research for the EnErgy Transition a
nd Emissions Reduction) to reflect the further development of SWEET and th
e collaboration with the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The SF
OE and FOEN plan to issue three SWEETER calls from 2026 to 2028 through wh
ich three consortia may be funded. \n\nThe first SWEETER call for proposa
ls has been launched. To strengthen the involvement of representatives fro
m practical fields\, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy has made several a
djustments for this call. Among the most important changes are:\n\n	The ex
pected impact of a consortium on driving economic and societal change is n
ow planned using an impact model\, specifically designed to engage partner
s from practical fields.\n	Companies and other non-academic organisations
are now eligible to lead SWEETER consortia and are strongly encouraged to
take on this role.\n	Consortia invited to prepare full proposals will rece
ive dedicated financial support of CHF 25’000\, once the full proposal i
s submitted.\n\nThe guiding theme of the call is “Energy- and resource-e
fficient industrial processes”. Industrial processes present a challenge
to achieving the goals of the Energy Strategy 2050 and the Long-Term Clim
ate Strategy.\n\nResearch challenges to be addressed:\n\n\n	How can indust
 rial processes requiring high-temperature heat (i.e.\, above 150 °C) or i
ndustrial processes lacking viable commercially available solutions and st
ill requiring research and innovation (as of April 2026)\, be optimised an
d transitioned away from fossil energy carriers in a way that significantl
y contributes to the goals of Switzerland’s Energy Strategy 2050 and lon
g-term climate strategy while maintaining or enhancing the economic viabil
ity and efficiency of the industrial processes as well as the competitiven
ess of the companies involved?\n	How can the reuse\, repurpose\, remanufac
ture\, and recycling of components that already play or are expected to pl
ay an important role in the Swiss energy system be made more efficient\, s
 ustainable\, economic\, and socially accepted?\n\nApplication:\nA consorti
um is a network of academic and non-academic members that apply for SWEETE
R funding and use this funding\, supplemented by own and third-party fundi
ng\, to tackle the research challenges defined in SWEETER calls.\n\nA cons
ortium must:\n\n	Be led by 1 host institution that represents the consorti
um to the SFOE.\n	Consist of at least 2 academic member institutions:\n\n\
n\n	 member institution from Swiss universities or institutes of the ETH
 domain (ETH Zurich\, EPF Lausanne\, Empa\, Eawag\, PSI\, and WSL)\,\n	 me
mber institution from Swiss universities of applied sciences.\n\n\n\n	Cons
ist of at least 2 member institutions from the private sector.\n	Include m
ember institutions located in at least 2 different language regions of Swi
 tzerland.\n\nIn addition\, a consortium should:\n\n\n	Be composed of membe
rs that deliver complementary and significant contributions to the work pr
ogramme and receive an adequate share of the SWEETER funding.\n	Ensure tha
t various academic disciplines and non-academic fields of expertise lead W
Ps.\n	Strive for gender balance among director and WP leaders.\n\n\nThe ho
st institution must be a Swiss institution entitled to receive SWEETER fun
ding\,and is the legal entity applying for funding on behalf of the consor
tium. The host institution may be an academic or a non-academic institutio
 n. The obligations of the host institution include appointing one of its e
mployees as the consortium director.\n\nPartners that apply for SWEETER fu
nding through consortia are called members. In line with the need for tran
sdisciplinary consortia\, various institutions are eligible for SWEETER fu
nding. Institutions that are not eligible for SWEETER funding may particip
ate in a consortium’s activities as collaboration partners.\n\nThe SFOE
requires that SWEETER consortia are led by a triumvirate consisting of a d
irector\, an integration expert\, and a KTT expert.\n\nThe budget for the
call for proposals\, amounting to just under CHF 12 million\, will be allo
cated for two three-year periods with an intermediate evaluation. \n\nDate
s assocated with this call:\n\n	Deadline for notification of intent to sub
mit pre-proposal: 12 May 2026: Notification of intent to submit to sweet
@bfe.admin.ch. The notification must be prepared in English using the temp
late that is available on the SWEET website. The SFOE will acknowledge hav
ing received the notification by contacting the director named in the noti
 fication.\n	Deadline for submission of pre-proposals: 30 June 2026 at 12:
00 noon CEST\n	Announcement of evaluation results: September 2026\n	Invit
ation to prepare full proposals: September 2026\n	Deadline for submission
of full proposals: January 2027\n	Announcement of funding decision: April
2027\n	Consortium starts operations: August 2027\n\nFor further informati
