ssor at ENSA Paris-Malaquais\, and currently a Senior Researcher at the Gr
amazio Kohler Chair in Digital Fabrication at ETH Zürich\, where she lead
s the Immersive Models: Acoustic Simulation in Architecture and Spatial S
ound Arts project (ETH and ZHdK). Her work lies at the intersection of ar
chitecture\, sound technology\, and media studies. She is the author of A
vant-gardes sonores en architecture (2013)\, Les Murs du son: Le Poème
électronique au Pavillon Philips (2015)\, and Paysage de lignes: Esthé
tique et télécommunication (2022)\, forthcoming from MIT Press (2025).\
n\nThe Spectacle of Science. A domestic artifice by Robert-Houdin \n\nThe
watchmaker and renowned magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin retired in th
e early 1850s to a priory in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt\, near Blois. This re
 sidence\, equipped with a centralized\, electric time-keeping system\, ref
lects a distinctive feature of 19th-century bourgeois homes. Conceived as
an internal controlled world\, the house also serves as a public showcase
for the application of scientific and technological advancements. This cas
e prompts us to examine the epistemological models—ranging from the trad
ition of empirical knowledge to practices of illusory simulation—that ch
aracterize the modern era. This research is part of an ongoing SNF projec
t titled Immersive Models (Gramazio and Kohler Research/ETH Zurich/Institu
te of Computer Music and Sound Technology/ZHdK).\n
