DESCRIPTION:Prof. Franziska Weber (UC Berkeley)\nTitle: \nNumerical method
s for the Q-tensor model of liquid crystal dynamics\n\nAbstract: \nLiquid
crystals are an intermediate state of matter between liquids and solids\,
characterized by partial alignment of their elongated molecules. This mole
cular order gives rise to distinctive physical properties that are exploit
ed in applications such as LCD displays\, smart glasses\, navigation syste
ms\, and consumer products like shampoos and conditioners. A widely used m
athematical description of liquid crystal dynamics is the Landau–de Genn
es Q-tensor model\, in which the local molecular alignment is represented
by a tensor-valued order parameter evolving according to nonlinear partial
  differential equations.\n
