DESCRIPTION:The Swiss AI Initiative allocated 8.5 million GPU hours in the
  3rd Call for Large Projects to support the research and development of op
 en-science artifacts in core areas of foundation model development\, as we
 ll as target application areas of critical societal importance. The 4th C
 all for Large Projects is now open with a submission deadline of 14 Septem
 ber 2026 (17:00 CEST).\n\nThe call is open for all proposals that align w
 ith the goals of the Swiss AI initiative and require considerable computa
 tional resources. Proposals should outline a research agenda that matches
  several of the following criteria:\n\n	advance core AI capabilities (sca
 lability\, efficiency\, alignment\, safety\, multimodal integration or eva
 luation)\n	advance research in AI fundamentals or impact applications of A
 I\n	benefit the Swiss or European or global ecosystem and societal context
 \n	foster interdisciplinary collaboration\, and/or collaboration across mo
 re than one group\n	ensure ethical AI use and regulatory compliance\n	prom
 ote principles of open science (including open-source\, open weights\, ope
 n data)\n	foster participation of various stakeholders\, such as public ad
 ministration\, SMEs\, Startups\, NGOs. \n\n\nFor the 4th Call for Large P
 rojects\, proposals in the following topic domains are of specific inte
 rest:\n \n\n	LLMs\n	Multimodality\n	AI Safety\n	AI for Education\n	AI for
  Science (including biology\, chemistry\, physics\, astronomy and others)\
 n	AI for Health\n	AI for Climate & Weather modeling\n	AI for Robotics\n	St
 rengthening the interface of AI and democratic processes\, including for e
 xample media\, law and justice\, or the public administration\n\nHowever\,
  proposals in other areas will also be considered.\n\nWho can apply: \n\nT
 he main applicants must have an affiliation with a Swiss public academic a
 nd/or Swiss public research institution and must be in a position to carry
  out independent research for the whole duration of the project\, as a Ful
 l\, Associate\, Tenure-Track Professor or similar\, or as a senior researc
 her\, i.e.\, holding at least a PhD plus minimum two years of research exp
 erience. Cross-institutional collaborations are also encouraged.\nMore det

 all application guidelines.\n\nFunding and duration:\n\nThe core purpose o
 f this initiative is the allocation of GPUh. The requested compute amount
  can exceed 500K compute hours.  The project duration is one year.\n\nHow

  submission platform.\n\nDeadline:\n\nA short Declaration of Intent must b
 e submitted by 24 August 2026 (17:00 CEST) and the deadline for the full p
