DESCRIPTION:Ben Davison\,  IMJ\, Paris\nIn the first half of this talk I
will give an introduction to motivic/refined Donaldson-Thomas theory\, and
explain the role of vanishing cycles in it\, focusing on a few specific e
xamples arising from local Calabi-Yau resolutions of singularities.  I wi
ll then present recent joint work with Maulik\, Schürmann and Szendroi on
the purity of such vanishing cycles for graded potentials\, and briefly d
iscuss the applications of this work in the theory of quantum cluster alge
bras\, specifically in attacking the positivity conjecture of Fomin and Ze
levinsky.  Finally I will explain the link between graded potentials in D
onaldson-Thomas theory and the study of character varieties of Reimann sur
 faces.
