DESCRIPTION:Eran Bouchbinder\, Professor at Weizmann Institute of Science\
 , Israel\nAbstract:\nThe spatiotemporal dynamics of frictional systems\, r
anging from engineering interfaces in mechanical joints to tectonic faults
that host earthquakes\, are governed by the propagation of interfacial ru
pture. A prominent rupture mode is self-healing slip pulses\, which featur
e a finite slipping zone. The physics of slip pulses is qualitatively diff
erent from their expanding crack-like counterparts\, as they involve the i
nterplay between leading-edge contact breakage and trailing-edge re-streng
thening (healing). The latter is intrinsically related to generic properti
es of frictional interactions at contacting interfaces\, absent in ordinar
y fracture of bulk materials. In this talk\, I will review a recently deve
loped theory of two-dimensional slip pulses\, which revealed intriguing dy
namical properties of slip pulses and provided extensive predictions for t
heir spatiotemporal evolution. The theoretical predictions are supported b
y large-scale numerical simulations and\, more recently\, by extensive lab
oratory experiments. The implications and potential applications of the th
eory will be discussed as time permits. \n\nReferences:\n\n	The dynamics
