DESCRIPTION:Prof Takeo Miyake\, Graduate school of information\, producti
on and system\, and Department of Electronic and Physical Systems\, School
of Fundamental Science and Engineering\, Waseda University\, Japan\n***
Drinks and pizza at 11:45 in the lobby of BM 5202 ***\n\nAbstract\nControl
ling the flow of ions and electrons at the device/human interface has beco
me an important challenge in broad fields such as bioelectronics and medic
al biology. These devices provide a new way to translate bidirectionally b
etween the ionic language of biology and the electronic language of circui
try. To this end\, we need to overcome an interface mismatch between devic
es and humans because the mechanical properties of a device are hard and r
igid compared with our soft body. In addition\, devices usually control el
ectrons\, while the human system controls ions. However\, most electronic
devices don’t work when wet. So\, our research focus is on the electron-
ion interface for emerging devices.\n\n1. Soft electronics for interfacing
devices and humans.\n2. Bionic system for wetware engineering.\n3. Ion-co
ntrolling devices for interactive communication with biology\n \n\n\nFig.

h.D.\, is a Professor at the Graduate School of Information\, Production a
nd Systems and the Department of Electronic and Physical Systems\, School
of Fundamental Science and Engineering\, Waseda University\, Japan. He rec
eived his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 2004 and his Ph.D. in Nanoscie
nce and Nanoengineering in 2008 from Waseda University\, where he conducte
d research under Professors Iwao Ohdomari and Takashi Tanii. He was subseq
uently awarded a Research Fellowship for Young Scientists by the Japan Soc
iety for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).\n\nIn 2009\, he joined Tohoku Un
iversity as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and
Robotics\, working with Professor Matsuhiko Nishizawa. He later moved to
the United States and conducted research with Professor Marco Rolandi at t
he University of Washington and the University of California\, Santa Cruz.
In 2016\, he returned to Waseda University to establish his independent r
esearch group as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2
021.\n\nHis research focuses on bioelectronics and bioiontronics\, particu
larly the development of soft and wearable bioelectronic devices\, smart c
ontact lenses\, and micro/nanodevices for interfacing electronics with liv
ing cells and tissues.\n\nHis honors include the Incentive Prize from the
Aoba Foundation for the Promotion of Engineering (2013)\, a Poster Present
ation Award at the Nature Conference “Flexible Electronics – Visions o
f a Flexible Future” (2018)\, and the Young Scientists’ Prize of the C
ommendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education\, Cult
 ure\, Sports\, Science and Technology (MEXT)\, Japan (2020) and so on.\n
